Thermodynamics: Theory of Heat
In lesson 2 of our Online HVAC Prep Course, we discuss the basics of thermodynamics.
As complicated thermodynamics can be, we explain it in a way that is easy to understand in our Online HVAC Prep Course. We will talk about what heat is and how heat affects temperature and how heat and temperature are two different things. This may sound confusing, but yes! They are two different things. We follow it with the discussion of how we measure heat and temperature. Later we will cover Convection, Conduction and Radiation and their meanings, along with the types of heat. We will define and explain sensible and latent heat, how they affect water and refrigerant and how this is the basis of the refrigeration cycle. We know that refrigeration is a transfer of heat, so we need to understand the types of heat and how it can be transferred.
In our discussion of pressure in a refrigeration system we will talk about a Manifold gauge set, the most needed tool for an HVAC technician to troubleshoot a unit properly. We will take a look at the parts and basic use of a gauge manifold set, what the numbers in the gauges mean and basic use of the gauge set.
We will go over Pressure Temperature Chart (PT chart) in the manifold set and we will show you how pressure affects the boiling temperature of a liquid (water in this case.) We will demonstrate the use of a vacuum pump, a micron gauge and the use of a PT Chart, other tools that are crucial to HVAC technicians.
